Class Information
Attire
Dress Code
Appropriate dance attire allows the instructors to see complete body movements and to assess technique and to correct accordingly. Having each age group of students distinguished by color can quickly remind instructors what age they are working with to provide appropriate instruction, while allowing us to keep students in class based on their ability, not their age. Similar attire for all students is less distracting for instructors and students. Loose hair is distracting and can limit dancers’ visibility. Jewelry can injure a dancer if they are wearing it or if it was to fall off and be stepped on. Staying hydrated is important during any physical activity including dance.
To help with consistency in class, all families should plan for making the switch to a Revolution Leotard as of Fall 2013. You can obtain these at TDC.

Class Placement
How it works
Initially, class placement for new students is determined by age. Children of similar ages tend to learn at similar rates and enjoy similar activities. Being in a class that you are too young for or that you do not have the experience for will frustrate you and take away from the other students in the class.
Placement for students new to The Dance Collective
| Age | Class |
| 18 mos-3.5 yrs | Early Start |
| 3-5 | Dancing Divas |
| 6-8 | Ready to Go |
These are without exception. Any exceptions to this will be made by studio choice only and will be made only after a student has danced at The Dance Collective. This does NOT mean that there will not be younger students in some of these classes. If they are in the class, they have been dancing with TDC and have been placed here by ability.
Students who have never danced at TDC, but are over 8, should come in for an evaluation. It is often most beneficial and cost effective to attend a few private lessons to gear a new student up for an already established group of dancers.
Once at the school, students will work through these three levels and then will be placed into a group of dancers who work similarly in both pace, attitude and time commitment. The group will move forward in an appropriate pace for them and should not worry about what level they are doing. Parents will be given constant evaluations on their children’s progress.
Class Make-up
What if I miss a class?
We do realize that emergencies and illness do happen and your dancer may have to miss a class. For this reason we do allow 1 missed class to be made up each semester. To do this there must be room in another class of appropriate level. If an appropriate class is not available the missed class will be forfeited.
Why can’t I make up more than 1 class a semester?
You will learn the most from attending the class you have been assigned to. At TDC we strive to keep class sizes small. If too many make ups were allowed, students in the classes full of “make up” students would not be receiving the attention they deserve. This protects the quality of all of our classes.
Enrollment
Why do I have to pay up front for a full semester?
Paying by the semester allows TDC to plan ahead for better use of class time and to save you money in the long run. We can plan classes by the semester instead of month to month. Knowing that everyone in the class this month was here last month allows your dancers to progress more steadily. Classes that start full will stay full and allow our prices to stay reasonable. Processing payments once a semester eliminates large amounts of paperwork, again allowing prices to remain reasonable.
Why can’t I get a refund part way through the semester?
When you sign your dancer up for class there are 2 commitments being made. TDC is committing to provide a certain number of classes of quality instruction to your dancer with a reserved spot in a class that has limited space. You are committing to pay for that service regardless of attendance. If for some reason your dancer is unable to complete the semester TDC has lost the opportunity to offer that reservation to someone else. To expect a refund would be similar to TDC canceling the rest of your classes, but keeping your payment. Semester schedules are provided for the entire semester in advance for your review.
What if my dancer and I are not ready to make an semester long commitment?
TDC offers Private Lessons. This is a great way to really get to know the instructors before you sign up for a semester. You will be amazed at the progress to be made in these one on one sessions.
Why does it seem at first glance that your prices are so much higher than other schools?
The price you see next to your child’s class is a straight out price. With the exception of gear (which can be done at many levels of cost) and recital costumes, there are no other fees unless YOU choose to do more, such as masterclasses. Your child will get the full experience at the price you see.
